Interest rate swap

A derivative exchanging specified interest-payment streams on a notional amount, commonly fixed against floating.

Why the distinction matters

Match the notional, amortisation, tenor and benchmark to the debt. Termination value, collateral requirements and counterparty risk can remain even when interest-rate exposure is reduced.
