What it does

The rule in brief

A presidential proclamation under section 232 imposed a 25% ad valorem duty on certain advanced computing chips and derivative products listed in its Annex. The duty does not apply to imports for use in US data centres, US repairs and replacements, US research and development, US startups and other listed uses that support the US technology supply chain. The Secretary of Commerce recommended a second phase of broader semiconductor tariffs, with an offset programme, after trade negotiations.
